Protection Over Profit:

Protection Over Profit was a magazine design project, where I was designing a range of spreads around an article of my choice from www.theconversation.com. I decided to design around the article "Government need to front up billions, not millions, to save Australia's threatened species", discussing Australia's environment and wildlife, and how it's endangered as a result of human activity (such as global warming, deforestation, etc), and how the Australian government aren't fronting enough financial support to tackle the problem.

My target audience for this project were young adults, aged 16 - 25, as these would be the individuals to grow up into careers that have the power to tackle this issue. The target audience for this project is what inspired my primary visuals, as I wanted to design an outcome that would catch the eye of this audience and encourage them into reading the article.

Juxtaposed collages became the main visual across the spreads. Wanting to create interesting and eye-catching imagery, I visually combined the aspects of wildlife and government to create a range of characters, who appeared across the pages. I also created a short video that would be used across social media platforms, which also utilised these characters. This video would then work alongside this publication in a digital environment.

The images above show the magazine spreads designed for the article, using the collaged characters shown previously. I used Adobe InDesign to lay-out the content of my pages. As well as these characters, other visual assets were created to help illustrate the article.

The article's title and subheadings throughout the text are designed as iPhone text-message bubbles. I did this to visually give these characters a 'voice', personifying them and allowing them to state the issues themselves, making it feel more personal. It also allowed me to further target my desired audience.

For the second spread I created a simple infographic, using various imagery of wildlife, cut into circles to show where endangered species reside across the country.

The third spread speaks more about the financial aspect, and so to make this page more visually-stimulating, I created a range of bank notes in Adobe Photoshop, each featuring an endangered Australian species.

I also created a short video that would be used to highlight the issue on digital platforms, such as on social media or as a TV-spot.

I used Adobe After Effects to stitch some video clips together. The first clip shows Australia as a bright, beautiful place, before being drastically cut-off by a black screen with the words "needs help", which is then followed by clips of the country suffering in various different ways. This strong contrast in tone helps to show the severity of the issue, and that Australia is a country with much more happening than what we're shown in films and online, etc.

I carried the collaged characters from the editorial into this animation as well, further personifying them and giving them a voice through animating the text within the speech bubbles in a 'typing' style. I also used the font Helvetica within this animation, keeping it consistent with the magazine design. As well as this, Helvetica in Bold also allowed me to convey the serious tone of voice that I wanted, which has been evident throughout my designs.
